Shed the Fear of Fitness

By Raphael | In Fitness, Motivation | on October 12, 2011

I recently read a study posted on Science Daily about the amazing benefits of exercise and how a 50-year-old can be just as fit as someone 30 years younger. It’s an excellent article and something I’ve been telling people for years.

But what happens when articles like this just aren’t enough? There are thousands of articles on the benefits of exercise, but I still don’t see many people doing it. If most people with gym memberships actually went to the gym, the building wouldn’t be able to accommodate them. They wouldn’t all fit. In fact, gyms have a business model set up to profit off of people signing up but not actually going.

So we’re back to where we started. A lot of people with good intentions who know they need to get in shape and lose fat, but who just don’t exercise the willpower and consistency necessary to reach their goal. Without that, they can’t reap all of the benefits exercise offers, and this article becomes just another one of many saying the same thing. Again. In fact, over time, information like this probably gets sorted into the B.S. pile or not even read at all, so nothing much changes with this crowd and the cycle repeats.

So I’m asking you for a favor. Send this post to one person that you really care about. One person who really needs to read this. Take a risk. I know it will feel uncomfortable, and you may hesitate hitting the send button — but do it. Because somewhere, someone who never would seek this information is going to read it, and they’re going to go for a walk, or get on their bike or maybe even give the gym a try. And maybe, just maybe, something will click. Something about feeling their body in motion will make them want to do it all over again the next day and the day after that — a new cycle may begin.

My goal is simply to get a few people moving and to experience feeling their blood run through their bodies, a sense of rejuvenation and the experience of being alive. Really alive.

Spread the word.

I believe we can be just as fit as someone 30 years younger. Glad this has been revisited and reiterated.

I shared this with a small group of women friends I have. We formed a connection on a different website and have carried it through to a group on fb since leaving that other site. It is amazing how easy it is to become stagnant.

Results are slow for me. I know I am not yet working out to my full potential, but I am moving and getting my butt to the gym on a much more consistent basis.
